CNA Certification in Indiana

You can begin an entry-level career in the healthcare field by training to become a certified nursing assistant.  CNAs work under the direction of nurses in a variety of healthcare settings.  This career is a good starting point if you wish to someday obtain a more advanced degree and career.

CNA Training Hours and Requirements in Indiana

In order to qualify to sit for the exam for certification for nursing assistants, you will need to attend a training program that has been approved by the state of Indiana.  The program must include at least 105 hours of studies.  Seventy-five hours will be spent in a clinical setting providing hands on experience with patients.  There are well over 100 training courses that have been approved in the state of Indiana.

A training program must be completed before you can apply to sit for the nursing assistant certification test.  The test will include written and skills portions-both of which must be passed.

Transferring CNA Certification to Indiana

You might be able to transfer your certification from another state if you were a certified nursing assistant and are now moving to Indiana. You will need to contact the Indiana Department of Health or visit their website at: http://www.in.gov/isdh/20510.htm.

In order to transfer your certification to the state of Indiana you must have an active nursing assistant certification and be in good standing with the Nurse Aide Registry in your former state. You must have worked as a CNA for a minimum of 8 hours within the past 24 months in that state.

In the state of Indiana you will be required to take a written exam and answer 80 of a 100 questions correctly. The exam is given by IvyTechCommunity College.

The following steps are required to transfer your certification to Indiana:

1) Contact IvyTechCommunity College at (317) 917-5948 or got to http://www.ivytech.edu/cna/ to obtain additional information. The online application can be found at: http://www.ivytech.edu/cna/eligibility/CNAapplication.pdf.

2) Required Documents:

• Copy of current out-of-state certification which shows registry number and expiration date.
• $65.00 testing fee

3) Mail completed application and all required documents to:  CNA Testing- P.O. Box 1621- Indianapolis, Indiana 46206

4) IvyTechCommunity College will notify you by phone or mail of the test date, time and location. The written test will be scheduled within 30 days of processing your application.

CNA Certification Renewal

You will receive your nursing assistant certification renewal form a couple months before your certification will expire. The form will be relatively simple to complete. There will be a section that will need to be filled out by your current employer. A past employer can complete the section if you are not currently working as a certified nursing assistant. You must have worked as a CNA for a minimum of 8 hours within the 24 month certification period and completed 12 hours of in-service per year.

FAQ

Q: I had a license in the state of Indiana but I let it expire in 2001. Do I have to retake the training or can I just appear for the state certification exam? Please let me know as soon as possible because I need to get back to work as soon as possible.
A: Since your license has lapsed for over 5 years, you will need to retake the training at an Indiana state accredited 105 hour training program and then upon successful completion, appear for the certification exam.
