In order for a nursing assistant program in Hawaii to be state approved, the course must consist of at least 100 hours.  The bulk of the hours must be spent in a clinical setting (a minimum of 70 hours).  Students will also spend a minimum of 30 hours on classroom training.  The state of Hawaii does have regulations which must be adhered to by any nursing assistant training programs, otherwise the programs are not state certified or accredited.  Search for programs that are state approved before you start to train for a career as a certified nursing assistant. Find a school from the accredited list below.

The state of Hawaii requires a nursing assistant course to be administered by a registered nurse.  The nurse must have at least two years experience in the healthcare industry.  It is possible for other healthcare professionals to provide some of the teaching for the class as well as long as they meet any requirements set forth by the state.  It is not difficult to work as a nursing assistant in Hawaii if you have already been certified to work as a CNA in another state.  Hawaii offer reciprocity for nursing aide certifications.  If you are already certified, you will not need to take training course and will not need to take the certification exam in Hawaii.  Instead, you will simply need to complete and submit the application of reciprocity and will soon be ready to work as a nursing assistant.

Did you know we have a study guide to help you prepare for the CNA test? Here’s a teaser:

Mr. Jones ambulates with a walker to the dining room for every meal with assistance. At the start of your shift you find Mr. Jones sitting in his chair. When asked, he states that he doesn’t feel like walking down to the dining room for breakfast today. What course of action do you take?

  1. bring the meal to his room
  2. explain the importance of walking daily and assist him to the dining room
  3. do nothing and leave the room
  4. none of the above

Answer B- See Section 3 of the CNA Study Guide (Physical Activity)

It is very important for residents to walk daily; therefore, you should actively encourage them to walk if capable. One of the purposes of nursing homes and certified nursing assistants is to help the residents to keep what functions they still have such as ambulating. The old adage “use it or loss it” applies in this case.

Physical activity is important for every system of the body. Without activity our bones become fragile and the muscles weaken which increases the incidence of falls. Without physical activity the endorphin levels become low and the client becomes depressed. The digestive system also benefits from movement to keep doing its job. When a client stays in the same place for too long pressure sores (bed sores) can also develop. Although older residents are not able to perform as much physical activity as young, healthy people, whatever they can do is helpful.
