Nurse Aide Registries By State

Once you become a certified nursing assistant, you will be registered with the CNA registry in your state.  There is a registry for nurse’s aides in each state.  If you are entered into the registry for certified nursing assistants, potential employers will know you completed all requirements to be certified as a nursing assistant in your state.

You will not be entered into the CNA registry until you have completed certain achievements.  You will need to have enrolled in and completed a CNA Training course.  It is important to attend classes and not to be late.  You will need to have received good grades in your course.

After completing and passing a certified nursing assistant course, you will need to take a certification test.  The test will have two parts, both of which you must pass.  Each portion of the exam will test the knowledge you obtained and skills that you learned during the course of your class.

Most states will have regulations regarding your opportunities to retake a certification exam if you fail that exam.  There are sometimes restrictions to the number of times that you can retake the exam.  You might also be required to pass the exam within a certain amount of time after completing a nursing assistant course.  If you do not do so, you might be required to retake a nursing assistant training program again before testing.

In order to be listed in the CNA registry for your state, you cannot have ever been found guilty of certain crimes.  The specific regulations will be set forth by your state.  Most of the crimes that are not allowed include crimes of violence or sexual assault.

There are generally steps you will need to take throughout your career as a certified nursing assistant in order to remain in the nursing aide registry for your particular state.  Most states do require you to have some continuing education throughout your career.  Specific courses might be required or you might simply need to complete a certain number of continuing education credits each year or so.

If there are changes in the nursing assistant field, you might be required to take special courses to maintain your certification.  These courses will keep you up to date on any changes in your field.  It will be important to pay close attention when taking these courses and to complete any assignments and exams that are required.

Your state will likely require you to work a minimum number of hours throughout the course of a year in order to maintain your listing in the nursing aide registry.  If there is a year when you do not meet the required number of hours, you might need to take certain portions of your training again in order to renew your certification. The specific requirements will vary among states.
