CNA Certification in Delaware

You can become a certified nursing assistant in Delaware by completing a CNA training program.   It is also possible to apply to transfer your nursing assistant certification from another state to Delaware.

CNA Training Requirements

The state of Delaware requires a total of 150 hours of training for individuals who are attending a nursing assistant training course.  Training courses can offer more than 150 hours of training.  In order to sit for the nursing assistant certification test, you will need to finish a training course that has been approved by the state.  These training programs will offer classroom segments as well as clinical instruction.

Transferring CNA Certification From Another State to Delaware

You can apply to transfer your nursing assistant certification from another state to Delaware. You will need to complete the Application for Reciprocity form in its entirety. You will fill in some of the details on the form and the other sections will be completed by the Nursing Assistant Registry in the state where you hold a certification.

When applying to transfer your CNA certification to another state, you will need to send a copy of your current certification. You will also need to show that you have worked as a full time CNA (420 hours) for at least three months for pay under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Steps to follow when transferring your license from another state to Delaware

1) Download the Application of Reciprocity form at: http://www.prometric.com/nurseaide/DE

2) Collect the following documentation:
– A copy of your ID card that clearly shows your picture and birth date
– A copy of your current CNA license

3) Fill out Section A of the Reciprocity form.

4) A fee of $30 is required to process your Application for Reciprocity.

5) Mail the above documentation to:

5) Have your Employer fill out section B of the form, and ask them to directly send it to the Delaware CNA registry.

Note: If you are transferring from Maryland, you will need a valid CNA license to be able to qualify for reciprocity.

Recertification for Nursing Assistants in Delaware

You will need to renew your certification in Delaware every 24 months in order to stay active a nursing assistant. It is necessary to work for pay performing nursing assistant duties for a minimum of 64 hours each 24 months. If you do not fulfill this requirement, you will be required to complete a new training program and pass the certification exam. As of January 1, 2014, you will also need to have completed 24 hours of Division- approved continuing education including a minimum of 6 hours for dementia training and 2 hours for prevention of patient abuse training during each 24 month period.

Assuming you have met the minimum hours of work and the required CE’s, you will need to complete the CNA Recertification form. The form for renewal will be sent to you 90 days before your certification is due to expire. The form will come from the Division of Long Term Care Residents Protection.
