CNA Certification in Oregon

The state of Oregon takes the certification of nursing assistants very seriously.  Nursing assistants provide nursing related duties (primarily non-medical) to patients in a variety of healthcare settings.

Oregon Training Hours and Requirements

You will need to complete 150 hours of training in order to become a certified nursing assistant in the state of Oregon.  Training programs must be approved by the state of Oregon and will need to include classroom and clinical instruction.  Once you graduate from a training program, you will be able to sit for the nursing assistant certification examination.

Transfer CNA Certification Through Endorsement to Oregon

Oregon offers certification by endorsement for individuals who currently hold certification from a different state. To qualify to apply for certification through endorsement in the state of Oregon, you need to have worked for compensation at least 400 hours in the past 2 years as a certified nursing assistant or in a position providing nursing assistant duties. Those hours of work must have been under the supervision of a nurse.

The Endorsement application will require you to submit proof that you received training at a state-approved nursing assistant training program in your former state. You will also need to send in verification of your active nursing assistant certification from that state. All details will be verified before your application can be considered. Please keep in mind that you cannot complete the application for endorsement if your certification is expired in another state.

If you previously completed a nursing assistant training program or previously worked as a certified nursing assistant in another state, you might qualify to sit for the certification exam without needing to take a training course again. You will need to contact the Nurse Aide Registry in Oregon for more details.

Exact steps for transferring your license to Oregon are as follows:

  1. Obtain an endorsement application by visiting Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) at: http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pages/cnacertification.aspx#Renewal_Infomation
  2. Complete all sections of the application for endorsement.
  3. Provide a copy of your certificate of completion from the Nursing Assistant training program in your former state.
  4. Provide all required information on the top portion of the Verification of Current CNA Certification form.
  5. Send the verification form to the state in which you hold a CNA certification that is active and in good standing. A list of CNA registries is provided on the “Forms” page of the OSBN website above. The nursing assistant registry in your former state will then send the completed verification form directly to the Board of Nursing in Oregon.
  6. You are required to be fingerprinted and undergo a background check in order to apply for reciprocity. Visit http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pages/fingerprintingfaqs.aspx for frequently asked questions and fingerprinting locations.
  7. Send your completed forms including the:
  • Endorsement Application
  • Nursing Assistant Work History form
  • Completed fingerprinting documents sealed in an envelope by the fingerprinting facility.
  • Copy of your certificate of training
  • Application and fingerprinting processing fee

Send all documents listed above to:

Nursing Assistant Certification Renewal

When you hold a nursing assistant certification, you will need to renew your certification every two years. The State Board of Nursing in Oregon will send you your renewal papers. They should be sent out to you about 6 or 8 weeks before your certification will expire. Contact the Board of Nursing if you do not have the papers a few weeks before recertification is due.

Complete all paperwork in its entirety and do not forget to submit any requested fees or documentation. There are a few criteria that must be met in order to renew your license. You will need to have worked for pay a minimum of 400 hours over the two-year certification period. You must have worked as a certified nursing assistant under the supervision of a nurse in order for you to renew your certificate.

As long as you have a valid license in Oregon you’ll be able to transfer it to ND via reciprocity. Just contact the ND nursing board and get the relevant reciprocity forms and you’re good to go.

I had my CNA, and it expired 2 years ago. Im currenlty a care giver, and would like to get my CNA license back so I can work in a facility. My question is, what steps do I need to do to get it renewed? Will I need to take the class again, or can I just re test and get it?

I have a CNA in California, transferred it to W.A. while going to school and worked with it for six months then moved back to California and I’m working as a caregiver. I’m now looking to move to Oregon in a couple of months. Will my CNA still transfer even though many of my hours have been in Washington and the ones that are in California are as a caregiver?

I am planning on taking my CNA training in California and then will be moving shortly after receiving the training.

Could I train in a different state (classroom + clinical) and take the exam in Oregon so that I wouldn’t have to go through the transferring of my CNA license?

I am licensed in 10 states and worked as a ACNA in New Mexico which is a CNA2 in Oregon. I already transferred my license by endorsement from New Mexico to Oregon but never received a CNA2 certificate just a CNA1. What can I do to get a CNA 2 certificate without paying to take the class?
