You can become a certified nursing assistant in New York by taking a CNA training course. After completing the course, it will be necessary to complete and pass the Certification Exam. Certification exams are maintained and administered by the Prometric Company. Many long-term care facilities and nursing homes offer CNA training programs and also serve as test centers for CNA certification exams. If you have been hired to work as a CNA upon completion of your nursing assistant training, the long-term care facility will pay for the cost of your competency exam. Read school reviews below.
If you are taking a certification exam at the facility where you received your training, someone from the facility will inform you of the date and time of your testing. This person will often be someone who served as one of your instructors during your nursing assistant training. If you are taking a nursing aide certification exam at a different testing center, you will need to contact Prometric to apply for an exam date. It will only take you about two weeks to receive details on the time and locations of your examination. Nursing assistant examinations will consist of written and skills portions both of which need to be passed to complete your certification.

I have been a nurses aide at a local hospital in new york state for four years. It is ridiculous to take a cna training course because it would be very redundant for me because I already know everything. At my hospital a certified nurses aide receives a dollar more an hour than a regular nurses aide… can I just take the cna test to become certified or do i HAVE to take the course?
I understand where you’re coming from but the rules state that you have to have taken the required training at an accredited training center before you take the test.
I graduated as a CNA from the Allen School for Physicians Aides licensed by the NYS education department on March 5, 1999 in Manhattan. I became NYS certified as a nurses aide in April 27, 1999 but my certification expired on April 26, 2001.
I have been working in the corporate world but would like to go back to the medical field as a CNA. I know things have changed drastically in the field since 1999 and I want to take a refreshing course to update my skills and renew my certification as a CNA.
I tried contacting the school I graduated from as they use to offer CNA skills refreshing courses to graduate students like myself but the Allen School for Physicians Aide located at the Pensylvania Hotel on 34th street and 7th avenue has gone out of busniess.
Is there a CNA skills refreshing course in NY that I may take to get my skills upto date and apply to renew my CNA certification?

The admins answer is not correct. according to the prometric website in nys if you have passed the test after 1989 and your certification has since lapsed you are only required to repass the test, not take a new course. (unless the first school you attended was not an accredited facility)
Thank you for clarifying that Ashley. I guess NY is a little different but most of the states require you to redo the training (at least a refresher course) if the license has lapsed for a longer number of years.

I’ve taken a certified home health aide course in NYC but I’m relocating to Baltimore Maryland & want to take my CNA training there. I woutld like to know will I be able to work in Maryland as a home health aide with my NYC license or would I have to do a whole new course in Maryland or can my certification be transferred. Also are there any good home health aide agencies in Baltimore
