Although there are more than 9,000 CNAs in Hawaii there are not many training programs. You can receive certified nursing assistant training in a handful of community colleges and medical (such as nursing) care facilities in the state. You will need to attend a program that has been approved by the Department of Health in order to be eligible to sit for a certification exam. They have open positions available for Caregivers and one of the qualifying requirements is that you agree to be trained in their in house training program for caregivers. We like to call caregivers as 80% CNA’s since they do most of the work nursing aides do except a little of the medical stuff such as checking blood pressure. The Good Samaritan Society is a fantastic place to work. They have an amazing view of the pacific and the nursing home is built on the Kootau Mountain range.

We researched a lot of CNA schools in Hawaii before we found this one. Most of the community colleges in the area charge $1000 or more for CNA classes. Many times the classes are excessively longer in duration to what is necessary. One can argue that they are quite thorough, but in our experience how many hours of training you endure, the real practical training only comes once you’re working as a CNA. This school has a 100 hour course for which the tuition is just $700. They also have an advance CNA training course which is slightly more expensive. If you’re finding it difficult to get a job after completing training, the advanced course might help you land a job quicker.
Nursing Related Scholarships in Hawaii
Kaua’i Community College – Kaukini Foundation Scholarship
This is an interesting scholarship that’s available only to students of Kaua’i Community College. You can either use the funds to pay for your LPN training or for RN training. CNA is not one of the options available at present. The only other requirement is that you MUST work in Hawaii for a year after you graduate. This is probably done to reduce the shortage of qualified nurses in Hawaii.
Kapi’olani Community College – PEO Chapter C Scholarship Fund Practical Nursing
This scholarship is for students pursuing a PN course at Kapi’olani Community College. Unlike the above scholarship, this one doesn’t force you to work in Hawaii or in a state hospital in hawaii once you graduate. Again, this is just practical nursing and not CNA.

For eligible residents of Hawaii within the age range of 16 year to 24 years old, Hawaii Job Corps Center provides no cost vocational and educational opportunities including CNA training. Supported by funding from the U. S. Department of Labor, this program offers educational services, job placement services and vocational programs for a number of different employment sectors. Paid vocational training is available in Automotive Repair, Business Technology, Culinary Arts, Facilities Maintenance, Health Occupations, Certified Nursing Assistant, Horticulture Worker and Painting. Many of these vocational programs will offer students a chance to learn green technologies that are positively impacting their desired field of employment. Depending on your situation you might also get free housing along with the training.

I am a cna graduate and i recieved my certificate of completion in 2008. I am not certified yet and I am not sure of what to do since it’s been a while since I graduated. I am not certified yet and wanted to continue education or training to become certified. What are my options and what type of help do I qualify for? I am currently recieving assistance from the state and currently unemployed. I’m an active job seeker willing to perform hands on training.
