Free CNA Training in Michigan

You might be looking for free cna training if you want to start a new career as a certified nursing assistant but do not have the extra money to pay for training.  Most states offer a few different options to help individuals who want to start a new career but cannot afford training.  The state of Michigan is no exception. You’ll find many free training opportunities below:

1) It is possible to receive free CNA training through the Red Cross training course in Michigan.  The Red Cross training program is part of the No Worker Left Behind Act in Michigan.  Individuals who are earning less than $40,000 can qualify for training.  Training is offered in the Detroit Michigan Branch of the American Red Cross.

2) There are community colleges and technical schools that offer certified nursing assistant training in Michigan.  You should contact local colleges in your area to determine if any have cna programs.  If they do, you will want to contact the financial aid office to determine if you can qualify for any grants or other financial assistance for the training program.  If you receive enough financial aid to cover tuition and all other related costs, you will be receiving free cna training.

3) Some nursing assistant training programs offer scholarships to students.  Qualified nursing assistants are in a very high demand and therefore, training schools are constantly looking for motivated individuals to train as CNAs.  In order to make it easier for people to receive training as certified nursing assistants, many programs offer scholarships.  If you qualify for a scholarship that covers all costs associated with your training and certification, you will have found free cna training.

Greater Horizon Training Institute
7310 Woodward Ave-Ste 603-Detroit, MI 48202
Greater Horizon Training Institute offers a CNA training program that will make graduates eligible to sit for the state certification.  The school does provide test preparation help for their students so that they have a good idea of what to expect on the exam and so they have a good opportunity to pass the exam the first time. Some graduates commented that their high school career advisors strongly recommended this school for students who wanted to train for a healthcare field without the need to spend a great deal of time or money doing so. At Greater Horizon Training Institute, they recognize that sometimes students need to get to work rather quickly.  They may not be able to spend too many months or even week training for a career that will offer gainful employment.  As such, their CNA training program can be completed in as little as two weeks.  There is one week that will be spent doing clinical where they will actually work at a healthcare facility.

The Greater Horizon Training Institute has some good instructors.  In fact, one of the main classroom instructors worked herself for an extended time as a certified nursing assistant.  She later went on to become a licensed practical nurse. She is able to teach students based on years of experience and all the knowledge she has obtained working in the nursing fields. The clinical instructors are also very excellent and are able to help students to learn how to provide safe and efficient direct patient care.  Students learn how to interact well with patients and to show them the kindness they need if they are ill, injured or facing extended time in a healthcare or long-term care facility.

Some hands on type experience will be obtained at the training center in addition to their clinical experience.  Students will practice various CNA tasks and use various equipment that is used regularly by nursing assistants. Of course, a good part of the course is also spent in classroom instructions.  Patients need to learn the fundamentals of entry level nursing care before they can begin carrying out the duties and the tests in a direct care setting. Instructors are there to help their students prepare for their new career from start to finish.  The school even offers some resume preparation assistance and can even help with job placement in some cases.

I was looking for a consolidated list of agencies that provide CNA program in Detroit, MI.. You provided it to me. Now I can call for a possible one that will suit my schedule for the CNA certificate. I called one but their tuition is a little too much for me. I can shop around. Thank you.Joy

cheers Joy I hope you become a CNA soon

    This is cool!
I was certified at East Jordan, Michigan’s Grandvue Medical Care Facility (Charlevoix county nursing home) in 1992 but have let the cert lapse. Grandvue provided CNA training for free-even paid a small stipend or whatever they called it at the time. Now they charge close to $400 for CENA training. Yikes!
I currently work privately in home care (and own a home based bakery 0=;) ) I also have a BA in Human Services-1980.
Anyway, I’m curious about re-certifying. Unfortunately the closest site on your list that offers “free” training is at Birchwood (Tendercare) in Traverse City-about 50 mile south of me, and with winter coming on I’d rather stay a little closer to home. There are other Tendercare facilities closer to me -Gaylord for example.
Do you know of anyway to re-cert without attending a lot of classes or traveling? I’m also not clear on what the difference is between CNAs and CENAs. Equivalency?
Thanks for any help or suggestions you might offer-Allison

      Allison,

It is REALLY hard to find a place that is free. HOWEVER, check with your employer! A lot of places pay for your CNA class once you work for them or if you currently work for them. I know that NMH and Boulder Park Reimburse some cost. There is no difference between a CNA and a CENA. It’s just a different way of writing it.
However, my husband who is a CNA has noticed that wages are dropping drastically in the CNA field. There was such a push for them, like nurses, that now most states have an over abundance of CNA’s which means places can start lowering their wages for them. My husband is paid over a dollar less where he is now compared to his last job. ( We moved.) In the Northern Michigan region I would expect to see them drop to bellow $10 an hour within the next year or two…

Get your training done and get into a good place now! Grandvue, Boulder Park, the hospital and Bay Bluffs are known to be the best employers around this area.

I know, it is ridiculous. I live in East Jordan and want to become a CNA and I don’t have $400 to pay for the training. NCMC used to offer it, but they no longer do. I can’t drive to Detroit to get it. I am at a loss right now and it is making me so mad!

No Comment. Is it possible that I can still get CNA Training for free. It is now 2010, I previous was a CNA in the year 2000, but had to give it up because I was employed at another job and became a CNA because I wanted to work with people who where ill. But after 4 months it became too much and I let it go. I can’t afford to pay for classes. Is No Worker Left Behind still in force.
