There are two Job corps centers in Wisconsin. They are located in Blackwell and Milwaukee. Both offer free of cost nursing assistant training to qualifying students. State of Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board – Academic Excellence Scholarship
The Academic Excellence Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors with the highest GPA in each public and private high school throughout the state. The amount awarded is $2250 and must be used towards tuition. In order to qualify, the applicant must be enrolled on a full-time basis at a participating University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Technical College or an independent institution in the state.
State of Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board – The State of Wisconsin Nursing Student Loan Program
The State of Wisconsin Nursing Student Loan Program provides educational loans to students enrolled in an LPN or RN program. The loan can range from $250 – $3000 per year. In order to qualify for the loan, the applicant must:
- Be a resident of Wisconsin
- Demonstrate financial need
- Be enrolled at least part-time in a nursing program
- Be enrolled in a participating University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Technical College or an independent institution in the state
- Agree to work full-time as a nurse in Wisconsin upon graduation- for every two years worked 25% of the loan will be forgiven. The maximum forgivable amount is 50% of the amount borrowed
Wisconsin American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship – Past Presidents Parley
The Past Presidents Parley Scholarship is awarded to students pursing a creed in healthcare. Two scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1000. In order to qualify, the applicant must:
- Be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, grandchild, wife or widow of a veteran
- Demonstrate financial need
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.5
- Be a resident of Wisconsin

Hi Brianna! I’m in a very similar situation to you, I am now a certified nursing assistant who is not pursuing it as a lifetime career but as a transition to another career in the health care field. There are definitely places for highschoolers to pursue cna training, as I did the summer between my junior and senior year in highschool. I would say try looking online for local programs. Also, I did get the training for free through a special program in my school district. Try talking to your school counselors and see if they have any special oppurtunities like that or at the very least they can help you find a local training program for becoming a cna. I am looking for an organization that trains and certifies CNAs. I enrolled at Herzing University in the LPN/DPN program which is set to begin on 7/9/2022.
A little background, beginning in high school, I worked in a nursing home as a Dietary Aide. I enrolled at Bryant and Stratton College around 1995 in Medical Assisting but then family issues occurred and I was not able to complete the program. In 1990, I became a Certified Pharmacy Technician through Walgreens and worked as a Pharmacy Technician until 2002. I worked at Walgreens and then worked at Team care/Neighborcare Pharmacy mainly automed for CBRF and other nursing home facilities. In 2002, I worked at Froedtert Memorial Hospital as a Receptionist in the Nephrology/Transplant Clinic. I left there in 2004. My healthcare experience then picked up again in 2006 when I worked at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare in Bad Debt Scheduling/Pre-Cert/Insurance as a Customer Service Rep II. From there I took a break from the healthcare field and went to college to obtain my Associate in Business Management/Human Resource Management.
My father passed in 2020 and I did most of his care. He had a trech and G-tube. I fed and provided his medications through the G-tube and suctioned his trech when needed. At the end of his home hospice, I took over 100% of his care, cleaning him, suctioning, medication, and hygiene. Because he was always my mentor and light, I decided it was time for me to go to school and be a nurse. I decided just recently, that it’s time and enrolled at Herzing where I will obtain my LPN and work to retire in a position I feel I was always destined to be in. My passion for human life and health will make me an exceptional addition to any facility.
