The following are examples of non-verbal communication, EXCEPT:
A. clean uniform
B. body communication
C. appearing confident
D. all of the above
Answer: D- See Section 2 of the CNA Study Guide (Patient Interaction).
There are two types of communication, known as verbal and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication involves the use of words and dialogue.
During non-verbal communication, the manner in which you carry yourself sends a powerful message to residents. Effective non-verbal communication includes appearing confident in your actions, proper upright posture (no slouching), and making eye contact. Positive non-verbal clues, such as a simple smile can go a long way with your patients.
Your appearance and uniform are also non-verbal signs. Always wear a clean uniform with your nametag displayed. Hair should be neat and clean and tattoos should be covered.
Effective communication skills are also important in the health care profession. As a CNA, you will be communicating with residents, their families, and other staff daily. Effective communication shows that you are interested in the resident; this is the first step in building rapport.
When you speak to residents, always address them properly. For example, it is a good idea to always address a resident formally as Mr. or Ms. instead of by their first name, unless they specifically request you address them otherwise.
Be sure to speak loud enough for residents to hear you, but don’t yell. Also, it is always important to communicate what you are about to do to a resident before the procedure; this will help them understand what is about to happen.
