If you wish to start a career as a certified nursing assistant in Ohio, you will need to attend one of the hundreds of training programs approved by the state.  There are so many training programs that it is quite possible to find some potential free training options.

1) You might be eligible to receive free cna training if you are currently unemployed, a displaced homemaker or receiving state or community assistance benefits.  Many organizations and programs that are intended to help individuals who are unemployed or underemployed will pay for training to help you start a new career.   It might be possible to receive training for free to become a certified nursing assistant.


2) Contact your local job placement agencies, unemployment offices, adult education department or welfare office if you are looking for free cna training.  Express your interest to improve your income by starting a new career.  These agencies should be able to help you locate any programs that could help you to cover the cost of training to become a certified nursing assistant.

3) Adult care centers, nursing care facilities and long-term care facilities often offer nursing assistant training programs.  These programs are often offered for individuals who have been hired to work as CNAs but who need to receive training and complete certification first.  If you do not mind working for the same employer for a few months or so, this option is one to consider for free cna training.  Typically, you will agree to work for the employer and in exchange receive your training.

Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation
If you’re disabled you might be able to receive free training from the BVR. The Rehabilitation Services Commission in Ohio handles applications for rehabilitation. You will need to get in touch with a BVR office near your city and see if you qualify. You might also be eligible for medicall billing and coding training as well as medication aide training. Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
Get in touch with your local unemployment office to check if you can get federal funds for your training. Usually, the process is stringent and they make you go through a lot of workshops just to see how committed you are. This may seem unfair but they are after all paying for your training. Once you get approved(usually in 3 to 4 months) you will get your training at a state assigned training provider.

National Black Nurses Association, Inc. (NBNA)
The National Black Nurses Association offers several scholarships to nursing students each year. The awarded amounts range from $1,000 – $6000 depending on the scholarship. In order to qualify, the applicant must:

  • Be a member of a local NBNA chapter if one exists in your area
  • Be enrolled in a LPN program
  • Have at least one full year of nursing school remaining

Make sure and review what is needed to complete the scholarship application and submit all required documents before the deadline.

 Ohio Higher Ed – University System of Ohio – Nurse Education Assistance Loan (NEALP)
The Nurse Education Assistance Loan was created to meet the states nursing shortage. It provides financial assistance for students in a nursing program who plan on working as an LPN in the State of Ohio for a minimum of five years. In order to qualify, the applicant must:

  • Be a Ohio resident and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Be enrolled or accepted into a approved nursing program
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Not owe or be in default of any Federal Financial Aid Program

Upon graduation the recipient must serve as a full-time nurse in the State of Ohio to qualify for 100% loan repayment.

 Central School of Practical Nursing (CSPN)- John Huntington Fund for Education
 The John Huntington Fund for Education is offered to students who attend CSPN.  In order to qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must reside in Cuyahoga County. All applicants who apply for the scholarship will receive at least $500 to be used for tuition.
